Partnership Places Focus on Taking Kerlan-Jobe to China
KANSAS CITY — June 14, 2021 — PreferUS Healthcare and Los Angeles-based Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic have announced its entering into the next phase of their China healthcare partnership. Under the terms of the exclusive long-term agreement, PreferUS and Kerlan-Jobe will partner to create a chain of high-end sports medicine centers throughout China. The first center is targeted to launch in Shanghai by early 2022.
“We have had the privilege to collaborate with Kerlan-Jobe since 2008. They have been a great partner and possess an unmatched level of commitment to, not only their patients, but also to their partners. The China sports medicine centers opportunity satisfy the three criteria we require for projects in China: 1) a strong and sustainable market demand, 2) support from the Chinese government and 3) a strong and natural fit with our U.S. investor/partner’s resources and capabilities,” said Michael Franz, CEO of PreferUS.
The announcement follows the successful development and implementation of the PreferUS and Kerlan-Jobe proof-of-concept sports medicine center at Gongli Hospital in the Pudong section of Shanghai over the past two years. The center at Gongli confirmed that there is a strong market demand for sports medicine in China and that the Chinese people place a high value on western medical services. The alliance also gives PreferUS access to local Chinese sports medicine surgeons trained at Kerlan-Jobe in the United States.
Under the terms of the new agreement, PreferUS will utilize the world-renowned Kerlan-Jobe brand as well as their clinical and operational resources and expertise. To insure an effective and efficient working relationship between the partners, long-term consulting agreements were executed between PreferUS and Ralph Gambardella, M.D., President and CEO of Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic and colleague Neal ElAttrache, M.D., sports medicine specialist and orthopaedic surgeon at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic and Board Chair of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Foundation.
“With the rapid emergence of recreational sports in China, we felt it was imperative to meet the growing demand for and access to advanced sports medicine services to help prevent and treat injuries,” explained Dr. Gambardella. “Kerlan-Jobe’s extensive experience in the fields of sports medicine, outpatient orthopedic surgery, and innovative rehabilitation along with our sports medicine-trained Chinese physicians, will enable us to provide clinically-proven sports medicine and orthopedic care in our state-of-the-art facility to athletes of all ages.”
